Crossing Borders, Diego

In 1909, while touring Northern Europe, the painter Diego Rivera spent a period of time in London with his first wife, Angelina Beloff, and María Blanchard. Although he was in London only for a short time, his stay in the capital of the industrial world had a profound influence on his life.

It was, as he said, a time of “liquidation and initiation.” The “confusing and deceitful fog” tore away the veil of lies around him, revealing the truth—not only in art, but in life itself.

Everything in this story truly happened… and, as with everything in Rivera’s extraordinary life, to doubt it would be like doubting history itself. These are some of the painter’s own words, spoken to Loló de la Torriente in a long and extensive interview.
