Pioneras

Pioneras is a documentary comic that rescues the true story of the first Mexican women’s team to take part in the 1970 and 1971 Football World Cups. Organized by private entities and not recognized by FIFA, these tournaments — in which Mexico achieved third and second place — have been excluded from the official history of world football.

Set in the turbulent Mexico of the 1970s, yet tracing a historical arc up to the present day — with special emphasis on the years of collective oblivion surrounding these brilliant players — the comic tells how a group of women confronted sexism, the lack of institutional support, and invisibility itself to represent their country on the highest international stage.

Through interviews conducted by the creative writing team, we reconstruct not only the sporting events but also the individual stories of these players, whose experiences reveal a struggle for dignity, autonomy, and recognition.

More than just a story about football, Pioneras is a visual and narrative tribute to a silenced generation, and a contribution to Mexico’s feminist and sporting cultural archive. Its publication seeks to inspire new generations of girls and boys, and to reaffirm the vital role of women in sports.
