Historia mínima de México
The Graphic Adaptation of the Brief History of Mexico is a a collaborative project between Francisco de la Mora and a diverse group of historians, writers, and illustrators.
The original Historia mínima de México was published in 1973 by El Colegio de México (Colmex), conceived by historian Daniel Cosío Villegas and a team of prominent scholars as a concise and accessible synthesis of the nation’s past. Its aim was to offer the essential historical knowledge every Mexican should have — a clear, rigorous, and educational narrative that became a classic reference work, widely read and translated.
Three decades later, in 2003, Colmex published La Nueva historia mínima de México, a completely revised and expanded edition reflecting the latest research and perspectives on Mexican history. It is this new edition that serves as the foundation for Francisco de la Mora’s graphic adaptation, published jointly by El Colegio de México and Turner.
Since 2009, De la Mora has developed a eight-volume collection, each book dedicated to a distinct period in Mexico’s history — from its pre-Columbian civilizations and the colonial era to independence, the revolution, and the present day.
Combining historical precision with visual storytelling, The New Minimal History of Mexico transforms one of the country’s most significant historical works into a medium that is engaging, accessible, and visually striking. Continuing the mission of the 1973 and 2003 editions, De la Mora’s adaptation seeks to democratize knowledge, foster curiosity and reflection, and reaffirm the importance of understanding history as a living part of Mexico’s cultural identity.
